Richard Goldman - 2009
Richard Goldman funded the world’s first facility dedicated purely
to track and field at the University of California, Berkeley. Goldman
Field honors Goldman’s father, Richard Samuel Goldman, a Golden
Bear competitor under Walter M. Christie, legendary Cal track and
field coach from 1901 to 1932. A prominent insurance broker, and
founder of the Goldman Fund and the Goldman Prize, Richard Goldman
has also served on the boards of the San Francisco Ballet, the Fine Arts
Museums of San Francisco, the World Affairs Council of Northern
California, the Commonwealth Club, and the San Francisco Public
Utilities and Port Commissions; has been instrumental in protecting San
Francisco Bay and its waterfront; and has helped establish the Tuolumne
River Preservation Trust. The Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund supports
Bay Area charities as well as national and international projects promoting
the arts, children and youth, democracy and civil society, domestic Jewish
affairs, education, the elderly, the environment, health, Israel, social
services, and violence prevention.
